Looking for success? You may want to hit the gym. On September 18, 2019, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. William Chong Hang CHAO conveyed how exercise contributes to one’s success in “Healthy Living”, the first HC News Discussion Forum of the academic year.

Exercise is a brain booster, according to Prof. CHAO. He drew upon studies that found correlations between exercise and increased intelligence such as boosts in hormone levels and neurogenesis (the formation of new brain cells). Through describing how a basketball star must make countless split-second decisions in a fast-paced game, the professor explained how exercise enhances decision making. He added that besides basketball, many sports are oriented around teamwork and cooperation, which cultivates leadership potential. When asked which type of sport would most enhance the qualities he described, Prof. CHAO emphasized high intensity sports that make one sweat.

The one-hour sharing opened students to the possibility of taking their performance to the next level with exercise. If leaders of the future could be fostered by working out a little more every day, would it be in the best interests of HC to promote events that establish leadership through sport? N8 does have wonderful facilities – and its free for students.
