Short description of project
At the turn of the 20th century, the Qing imperial government brought a series of changes to the education system, including the abolition of civil service examination (ke ju), in the face of a series of military setbacks. The evolution of the new education system continued with the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1912. It was then followed by the outburst of the new literary movement in 1917. The “language” itself was the core of all these events and it was in general named as National Language Movement. In this project, the focus will be the development of this series of movements in the first 20 years in the 20th century. Some original texts related to the unification of pronunciation, the opposition of spoken and written Chinese language, the Romanization of Chinese, the reformation of Chinese
characters, the promotion of new Chinese punctuation marks and eventually the establishment of a new of form of literary Chinese during the first 20 years will be reviewed so as to analyze how and why the intellectuals from the education and literature sectors worked together to promote all these movements.
