Honours College students who admitted to University of Macau in Academic Year 2020/2021 and after are eligible to receive financial support from HC to participate in study-abroad or exchange programmes. Below are 2 types of financial support offered by HC:

Students are required to fulfill “study abroad” experience during their studies at UM. The experience must be semester/academic year based and credit bearing with a minimum of 3 abroad credits successfully transferred back to UM. It must be international experience. Hence, mobility programmes to universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan region will NOT be considered as fulfillment of the Honours Programme. There are multiple ways in fulfilling this requirement with different types of financial support and requirements as stipulated by internal regulations; e.g.

  • A full time semester abroad at universities having agreement with the Honours College.
  • A full time semester abroad at universities having agreement with UM operated through the Global Affairs Office
  • A full-time semester/year abroad programme or requirement operated by faculties

† Different types of scholarship with requirements will be awarded to support this study abroad experience based on the availability of university’s financial resources.

Option 1 – One full-time semester abroad at universities having agreements with the Honours College.

I. Duration

The Funded HC Study-Abroad Semester usually takes place during the 2nd semester of student’s 3rd year of their study plans (4th year for 5-year program). Qualified students will be nominated and funded to complete one full-time semester at the universities having agreements with the Honours College.

II. Requirement

HC students meeting the following requirements are eligible to apply for the Funded HC Study-Abroad semester:

Academic performance: (1) Cumulative GPA* of 3.3 or above (For FLL students, cumulative Scale Average* 15 or above) and,
(2) Honours College Certificate Programme cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above.

*The above-mentioned cumulative GPA and cumulative Scale Average refer to the overall performance of a student in all the semesters of the specified years of studies, including all courses taken for the degree programme and minor programme(s).

Language proficiency: For studying abroad in the U.K. or U.S., students must obtain a valid TOEFL internet-based test score of 90 or above, or an IELTS (academic module) test score of 7.0 or above.

For studying abroad in Portugal, students must obtain valid CAPLE exam certification at Level DEPLE (B1) or above.

Leadership & service learning: Cumulative Competency Score (CS) requirement of 350 or above by the time of application, and 450 or above by the end of the semester prior to the study abroad semester.
Residential College residency: Students are required to have completed at least two-semester residency by the end of the semester prior to the study abroad semester.

III. Funding level & Coverage 

There are two levels of funding according to the academic performance of students. Applicants who fulfilled the requirement will be assessed and categorized based on their academic standing:

UM tuition during the study abroad semester Students who join the “Funded HC Study Abroad Semester” shall pay the UM tuition fee (Major programme + HC Certificate Programme) for that semester according to the UM Tuition Scheme of the applicable year.
Security deposit Students shall pay UM a fixed amount of security deposit before departure, which is equal to 1 installment (semester) of the tuition fee (Major programme + HC Certificate Programme). If the students successfully registered as full-time students at the host universities, the security deposit will be used to pay the UM tuition fee during their study abroad semester. If the students are granted a waiver of UM tuition, the outstanding security deposit will be refunded to the payee. Not applicable

  3. Health insurance and other mandatory fees or charges imposed by host universities*HC students receiving this sponsorship will not be eligible for other financial support from other UM units for the same purpose.

*Any expenses or costs NOT listed in the “Items funded by HC” will NOT be funded by HC or UM.
*The eligible students will be assessed and approved by a panel consisting of HC faculty members.
*Participating students are required to pass all courses during the Study Abroad Semester.
*Some partner universities may have English Proficiency Requirements for admission, please see the requirement (Link) for your reference. However, all applying students should meet the language requirement of the “Funded HC Study Abroad Semester”, regardless of the language requirement of any partner universities.

IV. Application

Eligible students have to submit the following form and documents the HC General Office within the application period:

  • Online application form
  • Official test result or score paper report of TOEFL or IELTS (for English) and CAPLE (for Portuguese)

Late applications will NOT be considered.

V. Rules

Rules of Funded HC Study Abroad Semester (Link)

Applicable to students who fulfilled the study abroad requirement through:
Option 2 – One full time semester abroad at universities having agreement with UM operated through the Global Affairs Office
Option 3 – Credit-bearing abroad programme or requirement operated by faculties

Student must earn at least 3 abroad credits successfully transferred back to or earned from UM.

I. Grant amount

This grant provides different levels of support to HC students who participated in study-abroad or exchange programmes offered by the faculties, Global Affairs Office or other units in the University. Students will receive a one-off grant at MOP10,000 after they completed the Study Abroad requirement with eligible experience.

II. Requirement

  • HC students who fulfilled the study-abroad requirement through Option 2 or 3 are eligible to apply for the Study-Abroad Grant upon successfully participating in a credit-bearing abroad programme (semester-base) operated by faculties or GAO in reputable universities (Excluding Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan region) during the student’s residency at UM.
  • The gained study-abroad experience must be credit-bearing with a minimum of 3 abroad credits successfully transferred back to UM.
  • Students must pass every subject taken at their host universities.
  • This grant does not apply to students who participated in the Funded HC Study-Abroad Semester operated by the Honours College nor who have been granted scholarship/sponsorship released by the Global Affairs Office or other UM units.

III. Declaration and Study-Abroad Grant Application

HC students with eligible study-abroad experience have to submit DECLARATION for the fulfillment of HC Study-Abroad requirement. Students can also apply for the HC Study-Abroad Grant with their eligible experience.

Eligible students have to submit the “HC Study-Abroad Grant” online application form to the HC General Office during the application period.  Applicants please submit the completed form with the following supporting documentation:

  • Transcript issued by host university
  • Confirmation e-mail of course exemption sent by UM Registry

The online application will be opened to 4th year (or 5th year for 5-year program) HC students during September/October every year. The exact date of application will be announced in due course. Late applications will not be considered.
