In March 2010, Honours College (HC) student, Giselle ZHANG Xiaoxu, took her initiative to cooperate with other students and brought the AIESEC (acronym of Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales) to University of Macau (UM).
AIESEC is a global, non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization run by students since 1948. It focuses on providing a platform for youth leadership development and offers young people the opportunity to be global citizens, to change the world, and to get experience and skills that matter today. Every year, AIESEC offers students opportunities on exchange or internship. Students participating are able to receive training in different areas of management, development, technical and education.
To start the formation of AIESEC UM, Giselle conducted a survey with 294 participants, proving the feasibility of establishing AIESEC in UM. She successfully gained supports from university management so that an organizing committee of AIESEC UM was immediately formed. Giselle was elected as one of the five executive members. Hoping to have the association promoted widely, the committee also built a website. They then proceeded to member recruitment. Through out a series of assessment, CV screening, group discussion and team games, and interviews by a review panel, 20 core members and international exchange participants were selected from 150 applications.
The AIESEC UM team has arranged diversified activities after the establishment. They went to Nanjing and Shanghai Regional Induction Conference and won the honour of “Best Delegate Team” in April 2010. They also assisted 6 students to Nigeria, Hungary, India, Malaysia and Poland for development and management trainee programmes. And recently, they hosted a Macau Induction Conference.
