Five Honours College (HC) students, Tiffany CHUI, Pauline CHAO, Eunice LIN, Rockie KUOK and Ken LAM representing UM attended the Beihang University Air and Space Summer Camp 2011 in Beijing from June 8th to 15th, 2011. This event was organized and co-organized by the Beihang University (Beihang) in Beijing, China and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) respectively. This summer camp is scheduled tightly in eight days, which aims to encourage the cultural exchanges amongst students from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. HC is proud of the delegation being the only representatives among Macau Universities.
The summer camp was kicked off by an opening ceremony with welcome dinner, in which all participating students received a warm welcome by the organizers. They then were given a brief introduction of Beihang University, campus tour of laboratories and academic buildings. After that, students were arranged to major seminars regarding the China aerospace science and technology.
Firstly, various activities in relation to aviation and aerospace technology in China were arranged to student delegation teams. This series of activities includes aerospace experts lectures, giving an overview of China aviation technology, the development and future prospects for Chinese Satellites; an introduction of Chinese Lunar Exploration Programme (CLEP) as well as the overview of the development of China’s manned space technology.
Aside from interesting lectures from world-renowned aerospace experts, HC students also joined several aerospace professional tours by visiting the China Aviation Museum, Beijing Aviation Museum and China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) as well as the relevant laboratories, etc. The museum tours greatly stimulated students’ thirst for knowledge of space exploration.
Throughout the summer camp, HC students were hospitably welcomed by the organizer. They had an exciting journey to better understand Beijing’s cultural landmarks, such as the Great Wall, the Beijing National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), the Beijing National Aquatics Center (Water Cube), the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, etc.

From preparation for and participation in the summer camp, the HC students not only expected to comprehend more of their knowledge about China’s modern aviation, aerospace and the cultures, but also deepened friendships from Beihang and CUHK students.

Rockie KUOK expressed his appreciation of the assiduity and diligence of Beihang students regardless their lower living standard in mainland whilst still could devote tremendous endeavors in their studies. He also commented that “by communicating with CUHK students, a lot of information about the Residential College System was introduced to HC students, a very valuable exchange platform for our future Hengqin new campus.
All in all, HC students could explore the air and space knowledge, expend their social network and deepen their China hearts in this ancient city through this memorable summer camp.
