The Honours College, ever intent on forming future leaders, is proud to announce that ten students of the College won awards at home and abroad, having gained recognition worldwide throughout the year from various fields such as business management, debate, poetry recitation, mathematics and even sports.
In October of 2015, Scarlett ZHANG from Class of 2017 won the 2nd prize at the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling of China (CUMCM). Organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the CUMCM is a national contest in the field of mathematical modelling, and currently is also the largest mathematical modelling contest in the world. The story did not stop there either, as she and her team also received a 2nd prize ‘Honorable Mention’ at the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) held in the United States on April 8, 2016 for her team’s water supply and demand model that predicts the severity of water scarcity over the next 15 years.
While at home in Macau, Carol DUAN and Lynn LIN, Class of 2016 students won the 2nd prize at the 6th Asia-Pacific Communication Exchange Association Business Presentation Contest on March 20, 2016. This contest is co-organized by the Asia-Pacific Communication Exchange Association (APCEA) and China Mainland Students’ Association. The team of Carol and Lynn’s promotional theme focused on life of ordinary people in Macau.
Claire CHAN, also a student from the Class of 2016, won the championship in the advance level at the 11th National Portuguese Poetry Recitation Contest, co-organized by Macao Polytechnic Institute and the Tertiary Education Services Office on April 4, 2016. The competition has attracted 32 contestants from 11 universities in both mainland China and Macao.
Taking the game to another level, Jenny WONG and David LEONG, from Class of 2016 students, won the 3rd prize at the 19th FLTRP Cup National English Debating Competition. This competition, held on the 24th of May, is the largest and considered to be the most influential English debating competition in China. Ranked 2nd and 4th respectively, Jenny and David performed brilliantly amongst the 248 debaters in the competition.
Our sophomores has no lack of talents either. Josephine PUN of the Class of 2018, gained triple recognition from various competitions. She first received second prize from the 6th Corporate Culture Case Analysis Competition 2016 (Macau Region) on April 6, 2016, then going on to win another championship and popularity award two weeks later at the 3rd Star of Sales Competition, organized by the Marketing Society, UMSU on April 19, 2016.
Kiris KUOK, also a member of the debate team and a student from the Class of 2018, achieved the title of Semi-Finalist at the Asian Debate Institute Winter Tournament organized by Asian Debate Institute held in South Korea on February 21, 2016. A week later she herself won another title of Grand-Finalist in the 2nd Novice Cup, organized by University of Macau English Debating Society on February 28, 2016. As if that wasn’t enough, she gained another Grand-Finalist title in the Supernova English Debate Tournament 2016, organized by Macau University of Science and Technology on April 17, 2016, rounding every bit of glory.
Vivian LIU, another student from the Class of 2018, won a 2nd prize at the 5th Business Knowledge Competition on April 10, 2016. The event, co-organized by the Macao Foundation, Macau Broadcasting Company, and the Union of Associations of Professional Accountants of Macau, attracted 13 teams from seven local higher education institutions.
And who said Honours College only had superminds and study powerhouses? Together with his team, Jack WU from Class of 2018 won three championships in various basketball competition, including ASCE 2016 Basketball Competition, Inter-College Council Basketball Tournament and 6th Higher Education Students from Mainland China in Macao Basketball Tournament. He and his team also won the 2nd runner up in the UM 5-a-side Soccer Competition organized by Office of Sports Affairs, University of Macau.
