Honours College Certificate Programme (HC20)

(for students admitted to UM in Academic Year 2020/2021 and after)

The curriculum is designed to nurture high flying students into globally competitive leaders and intellectual achievers committed to collaborative and creative thinking for Macao and beyond. It provides students with courses for learning and practicing leadership, experience of study abroad, community engagement at residential college (RC) and service learning on and off campus. To complete the Honours College Certificate Programme, students have to complete the following requirements.

Students have to complete 7 credits of courses including (one 3-credit lecture base honours course, one 1-credit honours project and one 3-credit cap-stone project) with a “B” or higher grade earned for each course.  Arrangement of the courses and required components are shown in the corresponding study plan.

Course Description

Language of Instruction

English is the main language of instruction

Students are required to fulfil “study abroad” experience during their studies at UM. The experience must be semester/academic year based and credit bearing with a minimum of 3 abroad credit successfully transferred back to UM. It must be international experience. Hence, mobility programmes to universities in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong regions will not be considered as fulfillment of the Honours Programme. There are multiple ways in fulfilling this requirement with different types of financial support and requirements as stipulated by internal regulations; e.g.

  • A full time semester abroad at universities having agreement with the Honours College.
  • A full time semester/ academic year abroad through the programme operated by UM.

† Different types of scholarship with requirements will be awarded to support this study abroad experience based on the availability of university’s financial resources.

  • Students are required to have four-semester RC residency during their undergraduate study at UM
  • For students admitted through recommendation of Masters of RCs and Dean of Students, they are required to have full (except study abroad period) RC residency during their undergraduate study at UM

  • Students have to demonstrate their leadership skills and services on and/or off campus by satisfying requirements through the Whole Person Development Award Programme offered by the Student Affairs Office (SAO), or an equivalent programme recognized by SAO.
  • With the Whole Person Development Award Programme, students are required to earn a minimum of 900 cumulative Competency Score (CS) with a minimum of 150 CS in each of the 5 core areas of development for graduation.
