China’s development in the past decade has been nothing short of astonishing, and a closer examination of where it is directing its progress could shed light on the state of near future. With that in mind, 26 students from the HC, along with 2 HC staff members and Dean MOK set out on a government-funded 5 day study trip around the Greater Bay Area.

The journey brought them around Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Hengqin where infrastructure are currently being enhanced and interconnected with neighbouring regions such as Hong Kong and Macau. The places visited included China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone Nansha Area of Guangzhou, the headquarters of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) in Shenzhen, and Gree Electrical Appliances Inc. in Zhuhai among many others. Regardless of the location, the group was well-received by enthusiastic officials who had much to say about their companies and the impact of the Greater Bay Area on China’s growth. The highlight of the trip was when the bus crossed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge, which has yet to open to the general public.

The study trip came full circle when HC students returned to the university for the Flag-Raising Ceremony. Held on May 26, student representatives from each college, various associations and the HC assembled with the professors of the university and several government officials to bear witness to the brief but significant ceremony. As the flags of the nation were proudly raised, the March of the Volunteers was sung in a united chorus.

On May 30, 8 student representatives from the study trip accompanied Dean MOK to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR. They were warmly welcomed by PU Hailong, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs. In the following meeting, students recounted their experiences of the study trip. Finally, they posed for a commemorative photo with Dean MOK and PU Hailong, which officially brought the study trip to a satisfying end.
